A Comprehensive Guide to Navigating Fire Damage with SERVPRO

8/24/2023 (Permalink)

The aftermath of a fire can be overwhelming and heart-wrenching, leaving homeowners grappling with emotions and uncertainty. As the experts in fire damage restoration, SERVPRO is here to guide you through the daunting process of rebuilding and restoring your home. In this blog, we'll walk you through the crucial steps to take if you find yourself facing the aftermath of a fire.

Safety First:

The immediate aftermath of a fire can be dangerous due to lingering smoke, structural damage, and potential hazards. Your safety and the safety of your loved ones should be the top priority. Ensure everyone is out of harm's way and refrain from re-entering your home until authorities deem it safe to do so.

Assess the Damage:

Once the fire is extinguished and you're allowed back into your home, assess the extent of the damage. Be cautious when inspecting the premises, as the structural integrity might have been compromised. Document the damage thoroughly for insurance purposes, taking photographs and notes.

Contact Professionals:

Fire damage restoration is a complex process that requires specialized equipment, knowledge, and experience. Reach out to a professional fire damage restoration company like SERVPRO as soon as possible. Their expertise ensures that damage is properly assessed and addressed, minimizing further complications.

Secure the Property:

If your home is structurally sound enough to enter, it's crucial to secure the property to prevent further damage or unauthorized access. Board up windows and doors and cover any openings in the roof to protect against weather elements and potential intruders.

Removal and Cleanup:

Fire not only damages through flames but leaves behind soot, ash, and water from firefighting efforts. Professionals will meticulously clean and remove debris, ensuring that no remnants of the fire are left behind. This step is crucial to preventing further damage and preparing for the restoration process.

Restoration and Rebuilding:

After the cleanup, the restoration process begins. This involves repairing or replacing damaged structural elements, flooring, walls, and ceilings. Professionals work diligently to restore your home to its pre-fire condition, often using advanced techniques and materials.

Addressing Smoke and Odor:

The pervasive smell of smoke can linger long after the flames are gone. Fire damage restoration experts use specialized equipment to eliminate smoke odor, ensuring that your home not only looks but also smells fresh once again.

Emotional Recovery:

The emotional toll of a fire can be significant. It's important to seek emotional support for you and your family during this challenging time. Counseling and support groups can offer solace as you work through the process of rebuilding your life and home.

Fire Prevention Measures:

As you rebuild, it's crucial to take steps to prevent future fires. Check smoke detectors, update your fire escape plan, and ensure all appliances and wiring are up to code. Fire prevention can spare you from the trauma of another devastating event.

While the aftermath of a fire can feel insurmountable, remember that you're not alone on this journey. With the help of professionals like SERVPRO, you can rebuild your home and your life. How High Heat Waves Effect Your Floridian Homes

7/13/2023 (Permalink)

High Florida Temps High temps can have severe effects on your home or business property. Here are parts of your property that can be affected, according to experts.

Each summer, millions of residents, and tourists alike, flock to the Floridian outdoors to get their fix of warm days and sunny beaches. Most are unaware of just how hot it can get in Florida. In fact, experts are now saying that the globe had the hottest June on record, and is on track for the hottest July, with the first few weeks recorded as being the warmest on record.

Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, the state of Florida is always influenced by tropical moisture, especially in the summer. This is why we Floridians must not only keep in mind the actual climate temperatures, but also the overall heat index created by extreme humidity.

Excessive heat can be a danger to you, your pets, and your property. But what, exactly, can happen to your property in the event of extreme heat? Here are areas of your home or business likely to be impacted by high temperatures.

It can have severe effects on your home or business property. Here are parts of your property that can be affected, according to experts.

Pipes

It goes without saying that water usage increases during heat waves. With more usage, comes more of a likelihood of them leaking or bursting.

Floors

Extreme heat has the capacity to warp and expand floorboards. And, unfortunately, hardwood flooring is the most susceptible to high temperatures.

Attic and Roofs

As the highest part of the home or property, the attic generally lacks sufficient airflow. And, with the excessive moisture heat brings, it can even cause your roof and/or shingles to deteriorate. That’s because roofs can expand and warp in high heat, causing shingles to crack. And, with a crack in your roof comes the high possibility of leaks into your property.

Foundation

Even the “below deck” is not safe from extreme temperatures. That’s because when the ground heats up, it causes soil to shrink and evaporate moisture. This excess can cause soil to separate from the footing of your structure, which in the end leads to damage to your foundation.

Paint

Lastly, excessive heat can cause paint to flake and peel. Believe it or not, cracks or openings left by paint can serve as doorways to moisture aka mold.

Protecting your Property Against Heat

Luckily, there are a few ways that you can protect your property against these elements, starting with sealing off the places for heat to enter—your doors and windows. By weather stripping or caulking, you can seal off the unwanted heat from entering your property.

As mentioned earlier your attic can be a prime target for heat-related intrusions. Make sure to insulate your attic and consider adding an attic door cover. Heat from the attic throughout the rest of your property can be reduced by installing a door cover in the hatch or stairway that provides access to the attic.

From an electrical standpoint, consider installing a multi-stage air conditioner. These devices actually adjust their cooling output and can even do so at lower speeds. All while reducing overall air conditioning costs. You could also install a programmable thermostat. These can be lower used when cooling isn’t needed (like at night or early mornings) when you aren’t actually present in your home or on your property.

Where Can You Go For Up-To-Date Info?

In the meantime, make sure to stay up to date with the current Florida temperatures—especially the overall heat index. See below for the top three sites to visit to stay in the know this “hotter than Hades” summer season.

Firework Safety for Floridians: Local Laws, Prevention, and How SERVPRO can Help Hinder Hazards this Holiday Season

7/3/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO fireworks safety statistics. July 4 accounts for double reported fires compared to any other day, with nearly half of these incidents caused by fireworks.

In about 24 hours, Floridians will celebrate our nation’s birthday with a time-honored tradition— fireworks. And while these are fun to look at, according to officials, they come at a catastrophic price.

In fact, it is estimated that July 4 accounts for twice the number of reported fires compared to any other day, with nearly half of these incidents directly attributed to fireworks. And, specifically, officials from Florida Fire Rescue division are urging residents to leave the fireworks displays to the professionals. However, if you do decide to partake in the festivities, there are some steps that should be taken to avoid catastrophic events.

Here are ways to keep you, your family, home, and/or commercial property safe from the hazards of using consumer fireworks, according to officials.

Know Your Local Laws

Remember as a kid lighting tiny sticks on fire and then spinning them in circles until sparks almost landed on your wrist? Well those are still all you can have, according to Florida Fireworks Laws. And, a lot of local municipalities have their own approved list of sparklers you are allowed to purchase.

These are not just limited to humans. Volusia County's beaches, for example, strictly prohibit consumer-grade fireworks. That’s because they not only leave a mess but can frighten nesting sea turtles and cause birds to abandon their nests.

Instead, check out your community calendar for commercial firework viewings. You won’t be disappointed, as Florida ranks as one of the top spots for commercial firework shows in the nation, many of them in Orlando.

Prepare Before the Celebration

Along with studying up on laws and regulations, another key practice is to always prepare your own surroundings for potential incidents.

If your local officials allow for personal use, make sure you are purchasing your fireworks from a professional provider. Never try to create your own fireworks or purchase them from an illegal source.

Prior to setting off, whether on your own property or at an outside location, always clear any dry vegetation and debris from the area. Even if you have already followed the appropriate steps so far, it is imperative to always keep a water source, whether it is a full-bucket and/or fire-extinguisher, close at hand.

Remember, keeping you and your loved ones safe is not limited to children, family, and close friends. Your furry friends have ears that are much more sensitive than ours. Make sure your pets are indoors before you begin, to reduce the risk they will run loose or get injured.

Use Caution During the Celebration

Be sure when picking your viewing spot that it is at a safe distance from where the fireworks are being ignited.

If you are the one who is providing the show, use safety eyewear, glasses or goggles, to protect your eyes while igniting fireworks. Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.

Back to sparklers again, children should never be allowed to play with or light anything other than these. Even then, sparklers should only be used under close adult supervision. While often considered a “safe” firework for the young, the tip of a sparkler burns at 1,200 degrees or higher, which can cause third degree burns.

If you happen to get one of those dreaded duds that does not ignite (or does so, pathetically), release the urge to immediately pick it up and relight it. Instead let it sit for a minimum of 20 minutes and then carefully place it in a bucket of water.

Clean-Up after the Celebration

After the show, it is tempting to call it a night and clean up in the morning. It is important instead to wait for the fireworks to cool off and then safely place them in a bucket of water. This will prevent any faulty fireworks from reigniting and creating catastrophic fire damage.

Also, be sure to pick up all matches, lighters, and any unused fireworks. These should always be out of sight and reach of children before, during and after your celebration.

Of course, if you do not want to deal with the hassle of cleaning up or the stress of closely monitoring your children, you can always get in the patriotic spirit other ways. Use glow sticks as a safe alternative to sparklers. Or pick up some noise makers or patriotic silly string from your local party supply store. Better yet, throw a birthday party, cake, and all, for the USA.

Better yet, leave the celebratory fireworks to the trained professionals.

What damages can come from a fire?

2/2/2023 (Permalink)

Flagler Fire Damage

Smoke damage
The residues, gases, and vapors produced by fire are products of incomplete combustion (PIC) that can include particle matter (PM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, heavy metals, dioxins, and other complex chemical compounds, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control. Chemical composition varies with the material burned, the amount of oxygen available, combustion temperature, and humidity. These variables change during the fire, as do the resulting PICs.

Heat damage
Damage from high heat is easily identified as physical damage, char, or blistering. Temperatures in a structure fire can exceed 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat can cause damage to surfaces and materials at much lower temperatures. For example, gypsum goes through a process of calcination at 176 degrees Fahrenheit where it changes both physically and chemically (release of water). At this point, the gypsum becomes brittle and can begin to crumble. The “heat line” is a visible demarcation between heavy and light smoke residue. An easy way to determine if the gypsum is damaged is to tap the drywall below the heat line and above the heat line; there will be an audible difference in the tone where this calcination has occurred. The heat line can be used as a reference to determine the potential restorability of structural components and contents.

Pressure damage
All fire damage has a pressure component that can help us understand why PICs end up in seemingly odd areas. A protein fire produces little pressure, but thermal dynamics will cause the PICs to be attracted to cool surfaces either by pressure or condensation. Areas in the kitchen behind cabinets and appliance mounting cavities, cool closets several closed doors beyond the source, and the inside of cabinets and case goods are suspect locations of residue and odors. Cleaning to remove the PICs will resolve the associated protein odor.

Addressing damages
Depending on the nature of the smoke and the surface involved, PICs often can be successfully removed by cleaning provided there is no heat damage. Heat damage often requires refinishing or replacing the surface. When addressing fire damage, restoration professionals must understand and consider the dynamics of fire, smoke, heat, and pressures to accurately assess the damage and prepare a successful scope of work.

Our team of technicians are professionally trained and super experienced with fire damage and know that it can be difficult to take in. However, we provide 24/7 service to keep damages to a minimum and get the restoration process done at a more rapid pace. Whether that be smoke, soot or odor! What you need to know about emergency fires!

1/15/2023 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Restoration Fire damage is one of the more serious damages as it not only puts your life at risk but also your home and lifestyle!

What does a fire need?

Heat is the first and most essential element that a fire needs. A fire can't even start or spread unless there's a significant amount of heat involved. Fuel is the second element found in the fire triangle. The fire will need a fuel source in order to continue to burn. The fuel can be anything that's flammable such as paper, wood, fabric, chemicals or combustible materials. Oxygen is the last element in the fire triangle. It's also one of the more important factors because oxygen is everywhere. A fire needs oxygen in order to ignite and continue to burn.

How do most fires start?

  • Cooking Accidents
  • Heating Systems
  •  Intentional Fires
  • Cigarettes
  • The Dryer
  • Chemical Fires
  • Grills
  • Overloaded Power Boards
  • Holiday Lights
  • Faulty Wiring
  • Faulty Appliances
  • Charging Appliances

If you want to keep you and your home safe from fire, knowing how house fires start is one way to stay proactive. Take the precautions necessary and you can keep yourself, your family, and your entire home from getting burned. Have a family meeting and discuss what to do in the event of a fire. While you cannot know when or if a fire will start, you can reduce the risk to your family by having an evacuation plan.

What to do in the event of a fire?

According to the National Fire Protection Association, house fires are responsible for more than 2,600 fatalities per year. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are fire protection steps you can take to keep your family safe in the event of a home fire. If you can extinguish the fire, do so thoroughly. If not, run for safety and call for help. To make your way through a fire, crawl beneath the smoke and be sure to avoid going through doors that are hot. Remember to GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL 9-1-1 or your local emergency phone number.

After the fire is put out and the damage is assessed allow our SERVPRO team to come in and restore your home or place of business to the best of our abilities! Our goal is to make it "like it never happened". Fire damage can easily be the toughest damage that we see. This is because fire damage can not only burn structure to an ash but also because if the fire department has to use a large amount of water, then we are looking at water damage as well. A house fire is an unbelievable and confusing experience. Although you’ll feel relieved to be safe, you may be overwhelmed by the many tasks for your Painters Hill home or business ahead. A SERVPRO of Flagler County specialist can help address damage to your home. Here are some other helpful steps to take moving forward.

Do:

Limit the movement in your home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets. It is important to try to keep your hands clean of soot to not further soil upholstery, walls, or woodwork. In your high traffic areas, it would be beneficial to place clean towels or linens on your carpeted floors. Make sure to pay attention to your refrigerator and freezer if the electricity is shut off, we would not want flooding or another odor in your home. It would be best to empty them and prop the doors open. Before SERVPRO’s arrival you could also tape double layers of cheesecloth over your air registers.

SERVPRO will document every aspect of your home and business. The more information you provide your insurer, the better. When it’s safe to do so, we will walk around your home and take pictures of all damaged items and fixtures. Also creating an inventory of damaged personal belongings. Something as a Grand Haven home owner or business owner you could do to help is to write down a description of the damaged  item, how old it is, and estimate the replacement cost. Include any receipts or bills of sale.

Don’t:

Attempt to clean up the home alone.

While it may be tempting to clean up, doing so can cause further damage to your belongings. Do not attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting us. Fire restoration professionals will come prepared with the necessary protective equipment to perform the task safely. Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water without consulting an authorized repair service. There is also a risk of instability and structural damage, luckily our SERVPRO of Flagler County team is certified to locate and treat these damages. A home fire is an unexpected event that can turn your world upside down. However, SERVPRO of Flagler County can help you rebuild your property. There are a few essential steps that can quickly get you back into your home or business. Review the following tips to make the process easier as you recover.

How Should You Restore Your Home After Fire Damage?

  1. Perform a Damage & Safety Assessment

Document all the damage to your home for your insurance carrier. They’ll use this information to determine what they’ll cover. However, leave the inspection to fire restoration professionals. Parts of the structure may be compromised or smoldering, and we’ll know how to move around safely. We’ll take pictures of the damage and formulate a plan to remove salvageable items and debris. We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage.

  1. Handle Damage Control

Have SERVPRO remove soot that could spread to untouched areas of the home. We’ll then clean any spilled water from the plumbing. This action will prevent rotting wood framing, or rusting metal hardware. Standing water may also erode your home’s foundation, leading to widespread collapse, so we’ll dry it and cover exposed areas with moisture and vapor barriers. Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs. If you take a look at our fire damage tips, our team of professionals gives advice on what to do after a fire and what not to do.

  1. Schedule Construction

Schedule reconstruction as soon as the debris is cleared. SERVPRO of Flagler County is your one-stop-shop for all your restoration and reconstruction needs. Our reconstruction professionals will seal any cracks in the foundation and reinforce the wood structure with more lumber. Once they’re confident that this frame will support the home, they’ll hang new drywall, repair roofing, and lay new flooring. Our 5 Steps to the Fire Restoration Process!

5/17/2022 (Permalink)

a cleaning sponge removing soot from ceiling You can count on SERVPRO to remove all soot and other fire damage from your Flagler Beach home!

Whether it started in a nearby brush or right on your stovetop, a fire can wreak havoc on your home. That is why it’s crucial to contact your local SERVPRO of Flagler County fire restoration crew as soon as the damage is done. If you’re wondering how we repair commercial and residential homes, the guide below lists the steps of the restoration process.

5 Steps to the Fire Restoration Process

1. Inspection

SERVPRO’s fire restoration crew will start by putting on safety gear so they can enter the site safely. Then, they’ll conduct a thorough inspection of the building, making a note of any soot, smoke, or water damage they encounter along the way. After the fire trucks leave, your home likely suffers from extensive water damage from firefighting efforts.

2. Containment and Board-Up Service

To prevent the smoke particles from drifting throughout the property and causing further damage, such as discoloration, the fire restoration crew will block off the most affected areas. If the fire consumed the roof, they will cover the area with a tarp to protect the property from the elements. Our team of professionals can also board up windows and doors in order to keep your property safe from other weather elements.

3. Water Damage Restoration

If water was used by the property owners or firefighters to stop the fire from spreading in your Palm Coast home, there may be water damage to address as well. The crew might have to rip out soggy carpets and remove wet wallpaper or insulation to prevent future mold growth. If mold has already begun to grow, they will execute remediation tactics to prevent it from spreading.

4. Fire Damage Restoration

This stage begins with soot removal on the walls, ceilings, and contents of the property. To remove particles already floating around, they may use an air scrubber. The crew will also work on restoring charred upholstery, window treatments, and mattresses.

5. Home Repair

Finally, the crew will wrap up the fire restoration process by addressing structural and aesthetic damage to the home. This might include reconstructing walls, frames, or support beams, replacing drywall or flooring, and repainting walls.

Home fires can be devastating both finically and emotionally, especially due to the fact that smoke and water damage from putting out the fire, often amplify the destruction to both the structure and the contents. At SERVPRO of Flagler County, we are highly trained professionals that will help you recover from devastating fire & water damage if you do suffer a structure fire, but we believe that prevention is better than a cure. However, we know that accidents happen. That is why our team is ready to respond to your emergency 24/7/365!

Mr. Do It Yourself

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

I know as homeowners we want to keep our costs low for anything we can, especially with the rising prices of just about everything now-a-days. There are some things we just should leave to the professionals though.

Many people may have gotten nice new big toys for Christmas that need special outlets or accommodations in the home. Some of these things may range from a tank less water heater to a hot tub or even an electric bike. These toys may need a special configuration in your home in order to charge correctly and not catch a flame while charging.

This is the time to call in an electrician to do these services for you. We see many different scenarios after Christmas because someone tried to do it themselves and caused more harm than good.

Following up on doing it yourself, New Years Eve we often see fireworks being used and can be quite dangerous if not extinguished correctly. Leaving a lit firework alone could cause anything from a small fire to an entire house fire because it caught onto something much bigger.

Whether it is fireworks or outlets, leave it to the professionals that know how to keep you and your family safe!

Avoid the Spark

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

Around the holiday times we were all worried about our Christmas Tree and decoration in regards to keeping them fire safe. Often most Christmas fires come from a real tree becoming too dry and catching fire from the lights or a nearby candle spark. We are passed that and most everyone has gotten the Christmas decorations put away.

Now is the time to take a look around your house as it may seem a bit more bare without those decorations. This is the time to replace those batteries in your smoke detector, cover your outlets if you have little ones or animals that may like to place with them and clean out your dryer vents.

Most homeowners do not clean out their dryer vents or get a whole home duct cleaning as often as they need to. You should be getting your whole home duct cleaning once a year and cleaning out your dryer vent a minimum of every 6 months. This will help prevent house fires while doing laundry.

If you can't remember the last time you had either of these services done, give us a call today to schedule!

Up in Flames

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

Just like that your home or business is gone. The flames are growing and you are unable to tame them. The fire department is on their way, but not fast enough to save your home or business.

Routine maintenance can keep your home or business from going up so quickly. We have several checklists for what you should be doing annually. You can find those posts further down on this blog.

Make sure to always have a fire extinguisher close by to stop a small fire before it gets out of control. You also need to check the fire extinguisher annually to make sure that it is not expired. If you need to have your fire extinguisher checked or renewed you can usually call your local fire department and they can either do it or direct you to someone who can renew it for you.

For a business you have to legally have your fire extinguishers checked and up to date every year. The fire marshal will do surprise but routine check ups to make sure that you are keep up on these not only for the safety of your employees but also the safety of the businesses around yours.

Fire Prevention Part 1

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

While in the thick of the storm season we are thinking about rain and cleaning out our gutters and swells but we also need to think about this inside of our home and preventing fires there as well. Here is the first half of the list with 5 measures you should be taking annually.

1. Test your smoke alarms regularly

While not all of us are wonderful cooks and may test the alarms out more frequently than every year it is still something that needs to be done.

2. Inspect all of your heating sources

If your units are not working properly it can quickly cause an issue of smoke or fire in your home. You can do this yourself or have a professional come take a look for you.

3. Keep your stove and oven clean

Some of us neat freaks make sure to clean to stove a few times a week or after ever use but that is not always the case. The oven is a bit more tricky. Some ovens have a self cleaning setting you can use or you might have to get in there and put some elbow grease into it.

4.Don't leave you kitchen

If you are cooking food or have an appliance plugged in do not walk away. This is when a spontaneous fire normally happens.

5. Always check your dryer

Make sure the clean out the lint trap after every use as well as have your dryer vent cleaned every year. We often forget this but it is one of the biggest hazards in the home.

Come back for part 2!

Fire Prevention Part 2

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

While in the thick of the storm season we are thinking about rain and cleaning out our gutters and swells but we also need to think about this inside of our home and preventing fires there as well. Here is the second half of the list with 5 measures you should be taking annually.

6.Maintain all cords

We have all see the mess of cords plugged in and tangled together and not well organized. This is a huge fire hazard that should be corrected and maintained immediately.

7. Properly Store flammable products

These products range from hair spray to chemicals we use for cleaning. Make sure to keep these is a cool dry place to prevent a fire. In Florida one of those places does not include to garage because of how hot it gets in there.

8. Be cautious with candles

Never walk away from a lit candle. If a spark or flame jumps it can quickly turn disastrous. You should also be trimming the wicks before every use.

9. Be careful with your fireplace

In Florida there are very few fireplaces but some home do still have them. Make sure to properly maintain them and have the stack cleaned regularly.

10. Keep fire extinguishers around

You should have several fire extinguishers in your home available quickly for anything that might happen at a moments notice. It is also important to make sure they are not expired.

Thanks for tuning into part 2!

When there is a huge thunderstorm you are most likely thinking about flooding or a power outage rather than a fire that could occur during a storm. You might be asking "why would I would about a fire during a thunderstorm?"

A lighting strike could hit your home causing all the of the electronics to fry and possibly start a fire from one of them. The biggest culprit we see is stoves and ranges. These are large metal devices that attract the lighting even from within your home.

They other issue could be that your home takes a direct hit and you have fire damage, smoke, damage, and water damage, not to mention a huge hole in your roof.

Good think we can take care of all of those problems though. While no one wants to deal with surprise problems like this.

When your home has water, fire, smoke, or mold damage give us a call to make it "Like it never even happened."

That can cause a fire?

Kitchen Fire

Most every home cooks at least one meal a day in their kitchen. Pots and Pans can easily overheat and catch fire. Not cleaning your kitchen equipment can also cause a fire. Build up of grease and grime on your kitchen equipment can expedite the fire and do a multitude more of damage.

Many kitchens are electric but there are still some gas stoves, which can also expedite the fire.

A kitchen fire does not always affect only a kitchen. If the home is not well maintained it can quickly spread throughout the home and take over the entire residence.

Even if the fire does not take over the entire home it will still affect the home. Smoke and soot will go throughout the house and into the duct work leaving lasting effects if not cleaned properly.

Luckily at SERVPRO we do everything from beginning to end. We can pack out the home while cleaning it effectively and taking out any unsalvageable areas as well. Once everything have been removed and is safe again we will put new material back and bring in your cleaned belongings again.

Did I unplug that?

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

Getting ready often leaves us worried if we unplugged the curling iron or flat iron. We always double and triple check that it is off and unplugged. Perhaps this is a generational thing as now most appliances like this turn themselves off after a set amount of time.

Appliances you should be worried be worried about are candle warmers, lights with faulty wiring, or laptops covered up. These things when they become overheated can quickly become a hazard. They can either melt or catch on fire. Depending on how dirty or clean the home is can lead to how fast the fire catches and how far it goes within the home. It is important to keep your home clean as well as take are of your appliances appropriately.

If a fire does happen in your home or business SERVPRO is here to get you back to normal, "Like it never even happened."

The least suspect Item

7/6/2020 (Permalink)

When you hear about a neighbors house catching on fire it is generally not something you would have suspected to be an issue. Common causes of fires are appliances, dryer vents, or improperly used and installed electrical devices.

All of the above listed causes of common house fires can however be prevented. Here are few things you can do to prevent a common house fire happening to your home. Make sure appliances are used properly and not plugged in continually. When you are finished using an appliance properly unplug it, store it, and then it is ready to use the next time you need it.

Once a year you should have your vents and ducts cleaned by a professional company. When they come out be sure to ask if the dryer vent is included in the cleaning. If the company does not include the dryer vent in the cleaning you can usually add it on for an additional cost, this is more than worth the money.

Finally we have come to the improperly installed electrical devices. When you are have something installed or moved make sure you are using a licensed and insured company to do any work at your home. This will ensure if anything goes wrong during the warranty period you will be covered through their insurance as well as you homeowners insurance.

Common Causes of House Fires

6/19/2020 (Permalink)

When doing home maintenance it is important to know what to look for. If you know some of the most common causes of house fires you maybe able to prevent some of these things happening to you.

Electrical Fires commonly happen when you least expect them. Unfortunately most of these you cannot here or see until it is too late. One this you can do is make sure your fire alarms are up to date with fresh batteries every 3-6 months. This will help you keep your family safe especially if it were to happen in the middle of the night.

Home Cooking causes about half of all residential fires. Kitchen fires normally come from built up grease, continually plugged in appliances and stoves and ovens being left on.

This one is less common in Florida but it colder climates space heaters cause many fires by not being properly maintained, set too close to flammable goods, or improper fueling.

Come back for part 2 of common House Fires!

Common House Fire Causes Pt. 2

6/19/2020 (Permalink)

We are back with part 2 of common house fire causes. We talked about several other issues with house fires in the previous post. We want to continue the most common causes here to round out the things to look for.

During the holidays real Christmas Trees are becoming a lot less common due to the amount of work associated with them. With a real tree you have to properly maintain it the entire time it is in your home. If it is dry the hanging lights on it could easily set it ablaze.

Candles are a big issue not matter where you live. Candles often get forgotten or are not properly maintained. A candle has to be maintained? Before you light a candle you need to make sure the wick is kept short enough to not be putting off large amounts of smoke. You also need to make sure it is properly placed away from flammable materials and on a fire safe stand.

Chemical fire are much less common than the other items on this list but are still something to be mindful of. Keep chemicals away from anything that could possibly have to do with a flame. Do not keep lighters in the same area as the chemicals either just to be safe.

If you ever have any disasters please give us a call at SERVPRO of Flagler County.

What is that noise?

Fire Alarm

Have you ever woken up at 2am to a blaring fire alarm telling you to change the batteries? We have all been there. You wake up and are disoriented as to what is happening and then you figure out the fire alarm is past due on changing the batteries.

While I know some of us have a schedule every 6 months to change to batteries, once a month to change the air filter, and once a year to have a duct cleaning, however not everyone has those reminders.

It is good just to have it on your phone or home calendar to change those batteries, filter, and duct cleaning. This will help to keep your family safe and not have any sudden accident should the issue arise.

Remember the next time you go to change your air filter to add check fire alarm batteries twice a year to be safe. You can check every three months if you prefer that better.

We are here in the need arise. Give us a call!

Candle's for Holiday's

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

As the Holiday's come and go there is one thing consistent in those days, and it happens to be fire. Most holiday events have a flame of some sort involved in them. With Christmas it is an open fire place, with New Year's Eve it is fireworks, etc.

It is important to know fire safety especially around the holidays to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings.

Fire safety during the Holiday's could be something as little as making sure a candle is not close to any fabric, or it could be making the leap over to essential oils and going completely flame free.

The new fad this season happens to be essential oils and going flame-less in the home, but still having a nice smelling home.

Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and is known for its' association with candles for the romantic appeal. A couple of candles can do the same trick as an entire room of candles without such a high risk of catching something on fire. You could also consider the multitude of other options, such as essential oils or wax melts that only require a bulb to heat the wax and spread the smell.

So many different options are available to help lessen the chance of catching your home or valuable goods on fire this season.

We hope this season finds you well, but we are always here in case of an emergency!

Common House Fire Hazards

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Everyone cleans and does projects around their home, but not everyone knows the hazards of not cleaning up or using the wrong kind of product. Below we are going to list and talk about some of the common things at home that are hazards.

Piling up dirty rags. This can be especially harmful if there is dirt and grease in those rags. The oxidization causes them to quickly become a fire hazards.

During the winter everyone one wants to crawl into a nice warm bed, which means heated blankets. Be careful to use the heated blankets on the lowest setting and not to pile blankets and pillows on top.

Neglecting Appliance recalls is the next hazard. If you let your washer or dishwasher go without paying much attention to the recall it could lead to flooding in your home.

To go along with appliances is lingering dryer lint. Not taking care of your dryer lint can lead to a big problem and a house fire there after.

Pay attention to things like these. They may not seem like a bit deal now until they cause a problem such as a fire or some flooding.

Summer Fires

7/3/2019 (Permalink)

The Fourth of July is around the corner as well as many summer cookouts and back yard fires. With many sparks that can be caused from a multitude of sources we all need to take extra steps to prevent house fires as well as wild fires. If you are using a grill that requires a tank make sure to always clean it, on both the tank part and the grilling surface. When finished with the grill cover it properly and store until its next use.

Backyard fires are a staple during the summer and fall months. We all love to roast hot dogs and s'mores on the open fire. When planning a fire be sure to check the local alerts to see where the fire level for the day is. If you are driving by a fire station they will always have a sign out front with the level of Low, Moderate, or High hung to let the public know. There is often a local social media page as well.

Every town and state is different regarding fire regulation. In the south there are quite a few stipulations as to how much to fire can be, how deep the base must be and whether or not it must be covered. In the Midwest there often are less regulations do to lower likelihood of wildfires spreading.

With all of your summer be sure to stay safe and call SERVPRO.

Do you have an escape route?

6/19/2019 (Permalink)

A fire can happen suddenly and grow quickly. Fire can become deadly and needs to be taken seriously. Is your family or business ready if a fire were to happen in your environment?

For most the answer to this question is no. The first step to fixing this issue it to make a plan for where everyone is located and how to handle it. The best way to do this, is to map it out. Put pen to paper with the layout of your home and/or business, where each individual or group is located, and what route they need to take during an evacuation.

After making a map be sure to mark on that map where all of the smoke alarms are. To be up to standards there should be one on each level, and ideally one in each room. Make sure that these batteries are changed at least every 6 months.

The next step is to establish the exact place where everyone needs to meet. For a family it may be the giant oak tree across the street. For a business it maybe one place or several place if it is a large establishment. It is important to know where this place is, and how many people should be there. When the fire station comes they will ask if everyone is present and accounted for to know how many and who they need to look for.

When you have made it to a safe place you will finally need to call 911. The fire department, ambulance, and police will be dispatched in ordered to get the fire under control and any medical attention taken care of.

When everything is under control give us a call at SERVPRO to help clean everything up and get you back into your home.

Having a Safe 4th of July

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

We hope you have a safe and happy Independence Day! Whether you are enjoying a pool party with a BBQ or lighting off some fireworks with friends, there are always risks involved with having a 4th of July party. This blog well help you be safer and more cautious this Holiday.

Grill Safety

If BBQ is the plan for the day then a little caution will go a long way.

  • When grilling, make sure you are well away from your home and deck railings, and make sure you aren't under any trees or low hanging branches.
  • Open your gas grill before lighting.
  • Make sure to occasionally remove any buildup of grease or fat so that it will not ignite.
  • Avoid any loose articles of clothing that could potentially catch on fire while grilling.

Firework Safety

Who doesn't want to light off some fireworks this holiday? I know I do, but making sure that you are safe can potentially prevent accidents from happening.

  • Always have adult supervision around the fireworks activities.
  • Make sure to never be directly over or in front of the firework as you ignite it.
  • If a firework doesn't go off, do not try to go and relight it or pick it up.
  • Make sure that you don't light fireworks off near or around the house so you don't light anything on fire.
  • Always, Always, Always, keep a bucket of water or a garden hose near by and ready in case of a fire or mishap.

We here at SERVPRO of Flagler County wish you all a fun and safe 4th of July holiday and of course if any accidents happen you can call you local and trusted restoration company for any of your restoration needs!

Choosing a Fire Remediation & Restoration Company

Choosing a Fire Remediation &  Restoration Company

Even a small fire can cause serious fire -smoke damage to your home, office of industrial building. As a homeowner or a manager of a commercial building, it's important to consider hiring the services of professional fire and smoke damage remediation contractor to ensure proper cleaning and odor removal. Here are a few tips to choose the best professionals for the job.

Training and accreditation

Look for IICRC accreditation which requires training and experience. A credible Fire Damage  cleanup contractor should have trained Technicians to perform any mitigation service.

Location

Location can be an issue, remember the timeline is important, some insurance companies have relationships with remediation companies, but they may not be able to get there for hours or even days. If the home or commercial building does not have the soot cleanup quickly secondary damage can occur.

Insured and bonded

It is always advisable to hire insured and bonded water in home or water in business removal companies. The water mitigation company should be bonded and licensed and comply with all policies regarding professional operation of a mitigation company.

Tools and equipment

The tools and equipment used by cleanup companies in removing the soot, smoke and odor in your  home or business are designed to be more effective than equipment sold for home use. Most businesses or homes can't afford to buy the expensive equipment and products necessary.

Can You Better Prevent a House Fire?

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

We know there are a lot of unknowns that you cannot prepare for in life, but what if there are some precautions you could take to sleep more safely at night and protect your family? Below are some tips and tricks to help you sleep better at night.

  1. Cooking  - When cooking make sure to never leave the kitchen unattended. If you have to leave for any reason make sure to turn off any burners or the oven. Do not let any grease or oil get too hot for fear of a spontaneous fire. Do not leave any flammable items near the oven or stove, such as towels or food packaging.
  2. Smoking - Never smoke in the home. A stray ash could easily catch anything flammable on fire and rapidly spread.
  3. Electrical - Never overload an outlet or use anything wires that are exposed. When you overload an outlet it could best case scenario, trip the breaker, or worst case scenario, start an electrical fire. Make sure all electrical outlets and units in the home are up to date. When looking at buying a home make sure to have an inspection on the home done.
  4. Candles - Unattended candles are a large leader in house fires. Make sure to always keep the wick short  as to keep the flame under control. Never leave a candle unattended, one stray spark can easily jump and catch on anything near it on fire.
Take precautions to never leave a heat source or an open flame unattended. Check your fire alarms batteries quarterly, and make be vigilant for any risks.

What to do After a House Fire

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

After a catastrophe like a house fire happens you are probably not thinking about what your next step needs to be. Here is a short list to help if something like this happens and better prepare you if this happens. House fires are scary and they are not normally safe to stay in after the presence of smoke and fire.  Your first step after a house fire will need to be finding a place for yourself, family, and any pets. This can sometimes be covered by your insurance company, which leads to the next step, calling your insurance company. As soon a catastrophe happens in your home you need to file a claim to get the ball rolling.  Most people will not think of this, but you need to call the police when a Fire happens. There will need to be a determination done by the local authorities that is was an accident and where it came from. The insurance company will want to wait for those forms and information before determining coverage.  Once you have had a few moments to gather your thoughts and get your family to a safe place you will need to get together a list as well as photos of the damaged items. Doing this yourself will ensure that you don't miss anything and the insurance company can get a jump start on what the claim will entail for replacing items.  Anything that was not damaged should be separated in the home to either an unaffected area or put in a storage unit the home has been restored.  These are the most important steps to take before any mitigation work and put back can begin.

Leading Cause of Household Fires

5/23/2018 (Permalink)

Leading Cause of Household Fires

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the leading factor in household fires in the United States. From overheated stoves to unattended flames, the kitchen presents a variety of hazards for even the most astute home chef. While living room and bedroom fires account for a small percentage of annual household fires, staying safe in the kitchen will prevent significantly more fires from damaging your property and endangering your safety.

Avoidable Accidents

Everyone experiences an accident in the kitchen from time to time. You might forget to turn off the burner or allow a sudden blast from the oven to set off your smoke alarm. Tiny accidents can lead to big trouble down the road. Here are some ways to prevent kitchen fires:

Set timers and pay attention to them.

Cover up unused outlets with plastic covers to prevent sparks.

Wear protective clothing when you cook with hot oil.

Keep small children away from pot handles and other hot objects.

If your kitchen begins to fill with smoke, try opening a window or another door to increase ventilation. You may even consider installing a fan to help circulate the air. You might be tempted to disable a ringing smoke detector out of annoyance. Avoid disabling your smoke detector even for a minute because you might forget to turn it back on when you really need it.

Staying Alert

Kitchens might present the most dangerous opportunity for fire hazards, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore the rest of your home. Turn off electric items that aren’t in use, and keep flammable fabrics away from direct heat sources. Not only will monitoring your electrical items keep you from causing a fire, but doing so will also help you save energy in the long run. The key to effectively preventing household fires is establishing a system of vigilance between you and your whole family.

If you’ve recently experienced damage as a result of water or fire damage, then let SERVPRO Flagler County / NSB-Titusville be your go-to source for information and advice. We offer a variety of services from cleanup to restoration, and we can help mitigate the loss you suffer due to fire and water damage

I just had a fire! What do I do now?

5/10/2018 (Permalink)

In the even that a fire happens the most important thing is to get the fire put out. This seems silly to even say; however, it is the first step to recovery. A fire usually contaminates anything within its reach. We have seen fires that happen in the kitchen that leave soot on the walls and smoke on the clothes three rooms away. Smoke travels fast and has little regard for where it goes and what it lands on.

Once the fire is put out it is time to call to allow us out to begin work. We will work with you and whomever necessary to get your work started right way to clean up the mess. Some items we may be able to save and launder while others may be a total loss. This will be up to the homeowners and those working with to complete the work. A fire will likely need to have rebuild as well. Our location does have a rebuild department and is happy the make the transition smoothly to ensure your home is well cared for.

Holiday Home Fires

12/19/2017 (Permalink)

The devastation of a home fire can be unbearable. Having a preparedness guide and educating family members the importance of fire safety is key.

The U.S Fire Administration has studied that each year, nearly 47,000 fires occur during the holidays. The cost is around $554 million in property damages each winter season! Wow, that's a huge number! Not to mention, the American Red Cross has found a 10% rise in home fires since 2000. So what are some important preparedness tips to help insure your family's safety during the holiday season?

  • Place Christmas trees, candles, and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources (fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents, and candles).
  • Purchasing artificial trees can be safer than real trees sometimes. If you do purchase a real tree, make sure that the needles are freshly green and don't easily break. Keep live trees as hydrated as possible by giving them plenty of water.
  • Make sure that light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturers instructions.
  • Always unplug the tree and holiday lights before leaving your home, or going to bed. Purchasing a timer as well will work to shut off the lights.
  • Make sure candles are always blown out before leaving a room, or going to bed.
  • Use sturdy tree stands to avoid tipping over. Also, keep curious pets and children away from the tree, as they can easily fall.
  • Keep anything that can catch on fire (pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains) away from your stove top.

Now, last but certainly not least, your smoke alarms are extremely important to check! Use the test button each month, and replace the batteries at least once a year. (Helpful tip): Changing out the batteries when changing your clocks (if you have a time change), is a great way to remember, or try changing them every New Years Eve!

Have a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season!

Oil can splatter and become the quickest way for a flame to catch and take course. Always make sure to keep a fire extinguisher handy and in reach should the need arise. It is also extremely important to teach family members the proper uses and safety tips for kitchen safety itself. SERVPRO Takes Varied Approaches to Smoke Damage in Flagler Beach

Removing Smoke Odors in Flagler Beach Needs SERVPRO

Smoke and Odor Removal Are Vital Factors in Fire & Smoke Restoration

Many smaller fires thankfully lack major burn damage to the home, but can still create a mess through smoke and ash. Small fires, especially in the kitchen, can coat an entire room or more in smoke and ash even if they only burn for a few minutes. As a result, multiple treatment techniques and avenues must be considered and used. Companies like SERVPRO that have a varied set of equipment and extensive contractor lists shine in these situations, as we can blend all potential smoke damage types and situations into a single restoration plan. Here are a few different ways we deal with smoke damage for a small fire.

Heavy-Duty Cleaning Equipment
Even contained fire damage in Flagler Beach often requires a huge cleanup job. Ash and smoke tend to coat nearby surfaces thickly, and smaller, more common household cleaning supplies simply aren't enough to remove this material. We have access to a variety of strong and specialized cleaning supplies that make short work of visible staining, streaking, and other non-burn damages.

Deodorizing Foggers
Once any visible damage has been cleaned up, the scent of smoke can still linger in a room. Smoke particles become embedded in ceilings, walls, and objects, becoming extremely difficult to remove fully. It is virtually impossible to eliminate the smell of smoke without the right tools, and it may linger for years or even decades if left untreated. We use specialty thermal fogging machines to flush out the odors from a room, removing even the deepest smoke smells entirely. That is the final step. Typically, we can use hydroxyl generators or ozone machines to change the chemical makeup of the ambient air during the fire damage restoration service.

Carpet and Fabric Cleaning
It's not just parts of the building that SERVPRO takes into account in a fire restoration. We also take care to treat objects and belongings that have suffered fire damage, employing a variety of advanced restoration techniques depending on the situation and specific item. Carpets, rugs and other fabrics are some of the trickiest materials to deal with, as their small fibers are often both delicate and excellent traps for ash and smoke particles. We handle these items with both a set of our in-house treatment techniques such as foam scrubbing and also extra help from local dry cleaning business partners.

SERVPRO of Flagler County knows the in's and out's of smoke damage, with specialty treatment programs for all situations and items in your home. Call us 24/7 at (386) 447-2202 if your home has suffered damage at the hands of a fire.

Fire Damage Deodorization Process Used In Palm Coast

12/21/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Specializes in Palm Coast Property Smoke & Fire Odor Removal

SERVPRO Eliminates Smoky Odors

Recently you had a small fire, caused by an electrical short, that claimed a portion of your garage where you stored the oil and gasoline for your landscaping equipment next to the rags you use for cleaning. No one was hurt, but now you have some clean-up and deodorization issues to deal with, and you know better than to attempt to do it yourself, or you simply don't have the time. The fire itself only affected a small area, but, the smoke damage and odors penetrated into the guest house upstairs and made the entire space unlivable. You'll need professional help to restore this portion of your property. Who can you turn to that will provide you with the services you need?

With several years of experience in handling both large and small jobs on a daily basis, our franchise servicing Palm Coast specializes in fire damage restoration issues just like this one. We'll take your call, assess the situation and send the proper personnel and equipment to your home immediately to begin repairs to your property.

SERVPRO technicians use several deodorization techniques to properly eliminate odors found in your home after a fire situation occurs. Our deodorization process starts with finding and removing the source of the smell, cleaning up odor causing residues and properly ventilating the area using air scrubbers to remove odor molecules in the air. However, multiple-phase odor control works a bit differently. By combining multiple techniques we can effectively eliminate odors, even when we aren't sure of the source.

Phase 1: Chemical Containment - Used to contain or block odor molecules from vaporizing into the air. We spray chemical deodorizers onto the odor causing materials, which forms a barrier that slows down or stops the odor molecules from evaporating.

Phase 2: Vapor Odor Control - It counteracts the odor particles that become airborne before we perform the first stage and releases deodorant vapors into the air to counter the malodor vapors as they make contact in the air.

Phase 3: Thermal Fogging - This step dispenses deodorants using our thermal fogging equipment. The deodorants pass through a heated area and are combusted to break down the deodorant solution into small particles. These particles chase and pair with any malodor, neutralizing it by changing its chemical composition.

At SERVPRO our experiences in vapor odor control methods, prove that this technique is especially useful in controlling fire damage odors. The first part prevents odor molecules from becoming airborne, while the second step stops odors before they have a chance to be detected by the nose.

SERVPRO only performs the services that are required to achieve our goals successfully. After performing each step of this process, we reassess the area and determine whether each subsequent step is necessary before moving forward.

Understanding Fire Damage In Palm Coast

10/25/2016 (Permalink)

Palm Coast Fire & Smoke Residue Are Cleaned Up by SERVPRO

Fire & Smoke Cleanup Depends on the Nature of the Fire

Obtaining a better understanding of how fire, smoke, and heat can damage your property and belongings will help you understand our restoration process better. Learning more about this topic will also assist you in dealing with our Technicians as well as your Insurance Adjuster.

Learn more about your role in our restoration process when fire damage hits your Palm Coast property. Trust your property to the professionals and assist us in restoring your property to its pre-fire condition.

Smoke and Soot Residues - Our restoration process at SERVPRO involves the removal of fire, heat, and smoke residues from different surfaces and materials. But, not all residues are the same, sometimes they are easily removed, while others can be quite stubborn.

Combustion - This happens when a solid burning material such as wood, turns into gas through heat. When combustion occurs, the material that is burning breaks down and combines with oxygen.
Which leads our professionals at SERVPRO to explain that for combustion to happen, three components must be present, fuel, oxygen, and heat. But, when they aren't in perfect balance, they result in producing smoke and soot residue.

Smoke - When the materials that are burning combust, they release solid particles, gas, and aerosols that float in the air, and are what we perceive as "Smoke." Depending on the type of compounds burnt, different invisible gasses make up a component of smoke. Burning organic materials produces oxides of nitrogen while burning inorganic materials result in the release of sulfur dioxides. Some of these invisible gasses that result from combustion during a fire are extremely dangerous to humans. Breathing any form of smoke can cause difficulties, but exposure to carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide can result in fatal accidents if consumed in large enough doses.

Invisible vapors aren't the only dangerous properties found in smoke. Small odor-absorbing particles of carbon and aerosols also become suspended in the air and provide us with the ability to both see and smell "smoke." When the smoke finally settles on surfaces, it then becomes soot (depending on the burnt material) or ash. Ash can be extremely acidic and pit metal possessions and ruin electronics.

All of our Technicians at SERVPRO are required to wear personal protective equipment to ensure their safety while on the job. Much like a Firefighter wears while fighting the fire, our Technicians protect themselves from the possibility of airborne particles while performing the restoration.

Our SERVPRO Technicians take great lengths to protect their fellow workers as well as any visitors to any jobs where we are performing a restoration. Don't the chance of being exposed to any of these harmful particles by entering your property without the proper protection.

The professionals at SERVPRO of Flagler County are here to assist you with your restoration needs. We are ready to respond to your request 24/7 year round, give us a call. - (386) 447-2202

Fire Damage to a Ponce Inlet Home

11/19/2015 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO To Restore Your Home

Fire Damage Restoration by SERVPRO to your Ponce Inlet Property

Having your residential property undergo extensive fire damage in Ponce Inlet can be a very traumatic occurrence. In addition to adversely impacting your emotional equilibrium, the fire can wreak havoc on the structural integrity of your property. However, learning more about what fires entail and how to handle them effectively can help you remain calm if and when the natural disaster or accident strikes your home. Get the information and advice you need regarding this important matter by reviewing the short outline provided below:

Physical Damages. Because the fire's temperature exceeds 1,200 degrees F, the heat from the fire can cause more problems than the flames did. Additionally, the smoke from the fire can make its way through the structure and possessions on your property. In so doing, the smoke can leave unpleasant odors and unsightly stains from soot. This cleanup is very challenging and should only be performed by certified IICRC specialists from SERVPRO.

Returning Home. After the flames are extinguished, and you can return to survey your home, the result can be a difficult experience. Seeing your property in fire damaged shape or utter ruin can leave you feeling heartbroken and helpless. If the damages are severe enough, the fire department may not allow you to enter your property. To minimize the current fire damage and to thwart extensive secondary water damage, you will need to get in contact with all the right people as quickly as possible.

Who To Call. The first individual you'll want to get in contact with is your insurance agent. If the fire damage were severe, he would dispatch out an insurance adjuster. This individual will walk through the structure taking pictures of damages, and listing fire damaged items and materials. Ask the adjuster, or previously your agent, for a referral to a fire damage restoration company. Chances are they will suggest SERVPRO. This local franchise is on the approved vendor list for over 315 insurance companies, property management companies and federal and state entities. Our inspectors will also create a list (CCIS) of damaged items and categorize them as salvageable, questionable, or candidates for tossing. By working in conjunction with you and your adjuster, we can assist in the claims process and save you time and money. Not to mention that we will relieve you of most of the stress from this unfortunate event.

Clean-Up Services. There is a specific protocol for fire damage control and restoration. SERVPRO has heavy duty pumps and wet-vacs to extract water from the fire department's work. We will secure the grounds against vandalism and theft and use plywood, tarps, and all means available to protect your home from the weather. An arsenal of equipment can be utilized to dry out furnishings and building materials. We will dispose of unsalvageable materials such as drywall, flooring, and carpeting. We can also repair and have replaced structurally destroyed materials.

Residential Fire Damage in Beverly Beach

9/22/2015 (Permalink)

Don't Let Your Kitchen Get Toasted!

SERVPRO Can Restore Your Beverly Beach Home After Fire Damage

Many homeowners in Beverly Beach know fires can result in significant fire damage to one's residential property. However, knowing how to deal with the aftermath of a fire can help you limit damages, save money, and remain calm throughout the restoration process. Learn more about how to complete the fire damage restoration process effectively by reviewing this short outline:

The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) states that roughly 40% of house fires start in the kitchen. Space heaters are the second most prevalent cause for fire damage in a home. Other leading causes of fire damage include cigarettes, candles, and electrical fires. The extent of fire damage caused by a house fire can depend upon the kind of fuel burned by the fire. Fires that involve oil or plastics can cause a sooty film to seep throughout your home by way of walls, crawlspaces, and ductwork. Fires that burn wood leave smoke and smoke odor.

Smoke Damage

Following a fire that is not severe, you may be able to clean your draperies and curtains. Additionally, you may be able to clean your ceilings and walls with a detergent, but this is highly ill-advised. If any soot has been left behind as a residue, call the professional fire damage restoration experts from SERVPRO. Even a small fire, depending upon the combusted fuel, can leave soot that requires specialized equipment and technical skill and training to remove properly.  If repainting is needed, at least there is a solid base so that good results can be had.

Your Flooring

Small fires will typically cause damage to your flooring. In the case of a kitchen fire, hot grease can hit the floor and thereby cause discoloration. If your floors are covered with ceramic tiles, you will often be able to start the cleanup process with some effort and have decent results. Hardwood flooring is quite durable as long as secondary water damage has not been too drastic. It may necessitate sanding and a refinish. Vinyl tile and laminates are most susceptible to fire damage from the flames or heat. In some cases, only the damaged regions of these flooring types will be in need of replacement. Carpeted areas subjected to fire damage will require replacement.

Water Damage and Structural Problems

Fires cause at least some water damage to the properties they impact. Every area subjected to water damage will require cleaning. The water damaged rooms will need to be cleaned up expediently to prevent mold growth. The cleanup process will involve water extraction and then drying and dehumidifying.

Call SERVPRO For Excellent Fire Damage Restoration

When your residential property in Beverly Beach is impacted by fire damage, obtaining excellent, expedient restoration services is a must. The Need For Flagler Beach Professional Clean Up After A House Fire

6/11/2015 (Permalink)

A house fire is a traumatic experience that can leave a family confused and shaken.

The Need For Professional Clean Up After A House Fire

A house fire is a traumatic experience that can leave a family confused and shaken. Many people are not prepared for dealing with the aftermath. It's just not something we commonly think about. Then the owners are slammed with dealing with insurance, what to do about their belongings, what to do about replacing important possessions, and where to stay. Few people will be thinking about the need for fast clean up. A fire damaged, water soaked home is a perfect place for mold and mildew to grow. Flagler Beach fire causes changes in structural elements that may make them unsafe.

Expedient clean up can prevent fungal and structural problems from developing due to a fire.

Mold and Mildew Growth in Fire Damaged Homes
Water seeping into the wood of the home creates a prime breeding ground for mold and mildew of several types. Moisture and warmth are the two key factors that promote growth. Not getting water cleaned up appropriately adds that second element that will allow fungus to flourish.

Flagler Beach mold can cause health effects. Small children, the elderly, and people with immune system problems often suffer most because of it. Mold regularly releases spores for reproduction. These spores are extremely hardy and can survive in climates where mold regularly can't. Thus, preventing those spores from finding good places to take root is essential in controlling exposure. Typically, they are so small that a person will never know if they are inhaling them or not.

Structural Problems in Fire Damaged Homes

Both fire and water can significantly affect the structural integrity of a home. Flagler Beach fire and smoke not only consumes materials but can dry them out further. That can create brittle structural elements which cannot support as much weight as it normally would. Water that infiltrates core structural elements can warp materials, cause sagging, and result in additional damage to the home.

A house Flagler Beach fire is a difficult circumstance to work through, but it does go deeper than what was lost in the immediate fire. Hiring a professional fire restoration and clean up company, like SERVPRO, can get a house back into a livable state with a minimum potential for future problems. No one wants to find out that they've had Black Mold growing in their walls or have a section of floor collapse five years later.

Consult with a professional fire restoration, like SERVPRO, and clean up company as soon as possible.

Locally Owned Company with National Resources

SERVPRO of Flagler County is locally owned and operated, so we are part of this community too. When you have a smoke or fire damage emergency, we’re already nearby and ready to help. We take pride in being a part of the Palm Coast community and want to do our part in making it the best it can be.

Fire Damage in Beverly Beach FL

There are two types of smoke damage after a fire, visible soot and invisible odor. All fires are different, making it difficult to gauge the exact type of damage that will occur. However, in most cases, we would recommend allowing a professional service to come in and properly clean the contents of your home to ensure complete odor removal and the saving of seemingly unsalvageable items.

In most fire situations, there are three restoration alternatives, cleaning, resurfacing, and replacing.

Cleaning is the removal of soot and foreign matters, which are not an original part of the material itself. Cleaning is usually the quickest process and the preferred option for the insurance company and homeowner(s).

Resurfacing is the process of taking a damaged piece of property or existing fixture in the home and redoing the surface of it to make it appear new. For example, if a house is not severely damaged by fire or smoke, but the paint on the walls gets damaged, the contractor can re-paint the walls. The contractor can also provide content refinishing as well as the reupholstering of furniture. Resurfacing is a good option when the homeowner considers certain things as sentimental and/or irreplaceable. Resurfacing can be more costly than cleaning, yet less expensive than replacement. Insurance companies will also recommend this alternative to homeowners.

The last alternative is replacement. Replacement is used when items in the home are destroyed or are beyond economical repair. Replacement is usually the costliest option because the unsalvageable items are being replaced with something new.
